35mm Aperture Card Scanning

B A Micrographics can scan all types of 35mm aperture cards using our high quality Wicks and Wilson aperture card scanners,
or Kodak / Minolta microfilm scanners with their superior enhancement software, that will give the best quality digitised images.

The original (1st generation microfilm) aperture card will be silver halide / gelatin film usually in negative format (white information on a black background), and should have been microfilmed to BS4210-2 1977 replaced by ISO 3272-2 1994. However, experience shows that this was not always the case, and many 35mm microfilm card images can be of poor quality or low contrast. This problem can be caused by over or under exposure, sub-standard original drawings, incorrect processing of the microfilm, or poor storage and use of the microfilm card.

If the material to be scanned is a diazo copy (2nd generation microfilm), or a positive image (black information on a clear / white background) these can cause issues obtaining a good quality reproduction. In these cases, a scanning technician would manually make adjustments to the scanner software settings to achieve the best possible results. This intervention will increase the scanning costs for the poor quality microfilms.
